Mental Health First Aid teaches you what to do when someone you know is going through a mental health crisis - whether that's a panic attack, suicidal thoughts, or just not being themselves.
You'll learn the practical stuff: what to say, what not to say, and how to connect them with actual help.
Why this course matters
The reality:
1 in 4 of us will struggle with our mental health
You probably already know someone who's going through it
Most people want to help but don't know how
What usually happens: Friend: "I'm not okay" You: "Oh... um... do you want to talk about it?" [Awkward silence] [You feel useless, they feel alone]
What this course teaches you: → How to actually start that conversation → What to do in a crisis (panic attack, self-harm, suicidal thoughts) → How to listen without trying to "fix" everything → When and how to get professional help involved → How to look after yourself while supporting others
It's not therapy training. It's practical skills for real situations.
When someone's struggling, they don't always say it directly. You'll learn how to spot the early warning signs in friends and how to check in without being awkward.
Having the conversation
The exact words to use when you're worried about someone. What helps. What makes it worse. How to ask about suicide without making things worse.
Crisis response techniques
What to do if someone's having a panic attack, self-harming, or in immediate danger. Step-by-step actions you can actually take.
Getting them help
How to connect someone with the Wellbeing Team, Hub of Hope, mental health organisations, or emergency services.
Looking after yourself
Supporting someone with mental health struggles is tough. How to set boundaries and not burn yourself out trying to help.
Who's this for?
This course is useful if:
You want to be there for friends who are struggling
You've felt helpless when someone opened up to you
You're interested in mental health and want practical skills
You want to understand mental health conditions better
Format: Online - camera optional, participate however you're comfortable Length: 3 hours - you can take breaks Next session: TBC (register interest and we'll let you know) Cost: Free for Coventry College students Certificate: Yes - Level 1 equivalent Mental Health First Aid Who runs it: Qualified Mental Health First Aid instructors
How it actually works:
You join on Zoom. Camera on if you want. Camera off if you don't. Entirely up to you.
Want to chat in the discussion? Go for it. Prefer to just type in the chat? That works too.
Want to sit quietly and just listen? Also fine.
Basically: You get the training and the certificate whether you're fully engaged on camera or quietly taking notes with your camera off. There's no "wrong" way to do it.
Why this works: Some people learn by discussing. Some people need to process quietly. Some people are more comfortable typing than talking. We get that. The course is designed so you can participate in whatever way works for you.
